President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday that recommendations in the International Monetary Fund‘s report on Cyprus confirm the government’s responsible fiscal policy.

“Reading the recommendations confirms the responsible fiscal policy of the government,” Christodoulides told reporters before the opening of the 15th Nicosia Economic Congress.

“If we had not followed this approach, considering today’s developments and unstable environment, our country would certainly be in a much more difficult position to face potential challenges”.

Many of the IMF’s suggestions are already in the plans of the government and the Finance Ministry, the president said, adding that his administration considers reports from both the IMF and European Commission “with a single goal – to strengthen the resilience of the Cypriot economy“.

“We do not demonise the recommendations or reject them. Many of these are our own initiatives that we have already begun implementing,” Christodoulides said.

The president added that the Cabinet would proceed with decisions and, where legislative changes are needed, forward them to parliament.

When asked if the IMF’s recommendation regarding the 13th salary was concerning, Christodoulides said it does not worry the government, adding that “there are many other things that need to be done beforehand that we are already working on”.
