Pig spotted taking a stroll at Larnaca Salt Lake

A pleasant surprise greeted the philenews camera lens at Larnaca Salt Lake, where an operation is underway to release two cars that have remained trapped in the wetland since last Wednesday.

Just as all eyes were fixed on the process of removing the vehicles, a pig was spotted taking a stroll on the northern side of the Salt Lake.

Who knows? Perhaps its morning walk wasn’t accidental. Perhaps it, too, wanted to send a message to anyone who’d listen: the Salt Lake isn’t suitable for cars to go joyriding about, but is rather a protected wetland that belongs to the animals and birds.

Larnaca Salt Lake is one of Cyprus’s most important natural treasures and is part of the NATURA 2000 Network and the Ramsar Convention, of exceptional importance for wildlife and particularly for the waterfowl it hosts. Which is why, since 1997, it has been under strict protection pursuant to national and European legislation.
