A barking dog, concerned neighbours, and a photograph handed to authorities proved vital in solving the disappearance of 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva, which culminated in a murder investigation.
Pampos Ioannou, the woman’s lawyer and close friend, took action after learning that her dog was barking continuously inside her apartment while she remained uncontactable. Noting that Vasilieva never left her pet alone, he suspected foul play.
On 23 October, Ioannou visited the apartment with police and confirmed his fears, finding the dog malnourished. Subsequent communication with the 61-year-old’s son in Russia revealed her relationship with a 43-year-old man, who yesterday confessed to her murder.
Ioannou told philenews that while Vasilieva’s son did not have the suspect’s phone number or details, he provided a photograph of the suspect alongside his mother’s dog. The image was handed to authorities and helped direct investigations toward the man. Methodical work by investigators secured key evidence and testimonies, leading to the 43-year-old’s arrest shortly before he was due to leave Cyprus.
The case took a dramatic turn on Saturday evening when the suspect confessed to killing the 61-year-old and led investigators to a well in the Saittas area of mountainous Limassol, where he had disposed of her body. Officers located the body in a field owned by the victim, and an operation was launched to retrieve it from the well.
A scene inspection by forensic pathologist Nicholas Charalambous indicated the body was in the early stages of decomposition and bore head injuries apparently caused by a blunt instrument. An autopsy is scheduled for today by Charalambous at Nicosia General Hospital.
Relationship with the suspect and angry outbursts
The victim’s lawyer, who reported her missing to police on 28 October, said he took several steps prior to filing the official report. He described Vasilieva as a particularly kind person and a businesswoman. He noted she appeared to be in love with the 43-year-old and attempted to assist him, including with managing his behaviour and angry outbursts.
While aware of aspects of her personal life, Ioannou did not have a complete picture of the relationship until communicating with her son. Ioannou added that Vasilieva had occasionally expressed reservations about people potentially exploiting her wealth, a factor gaining significance as investigators examine financial aspects of the case.
The victim’s son is expected to arrive in Cyprus today to give a statement to Limassol CID. Investigators seek to gather all available information regarding her personal relationships, her contacts with the 43-year-old, and her final days before disappearing. The son was also aware of an alleged traffic accident and money the suspect had reportedly demanded from his mother.
Financial motive under scrutiny
Investigators are examining whether the murder is linked to financial disputes.
During initial questioning, the 43-year-old claimed he asked the 61-year-old for a large sum of money, alleging he was involved in a traffic accident and needed approximately €70,000 in compensation.
Bank accounts belonging to both the victim and the suspect are being audited. Particular weight is attached to information that Vasilieva made large cash withdrawals prior to 21 October, days before her disappearance. Investigators are verifying the total sums withdrawn, the purpose of the transactions, and any potential link to the suspect’s financial demands.
Court appearance for premeditated murder
The 43-year-old Syrian suspect is expected to appear before the Limassol District Court today, Sunday, facing a charge of premeditated murder. Limassol CID investigators will request a remand order to continue inquiries and gather evidence.
Discovery of the body in a well
The 61-year-old’s body was recovered on Saturday evening (31 October) at the location indicated by the suspect following his confession. The suspect told investigators he threw the body into a well in the Saittas area.
Limassol CID officers secured the scene and conducted searches that led to the recovery of the body.
Despite locating the body, investigation work continues. Limassol CID officers are examining CCTV footage from the area to map the suspect’s movements and obtain evidence regarding the transport and concealment of the body.
Investigators are also looking into how the suspect selected the location. It is believed he was familiar with the area and the well on the victim’s field, which he allegedly used to hide her body.
