Passers-by restrained a man in central Larnaca early on Monday afternoon after he allegedly stole an item from an antiques shop and attacked its owner.
Video footage shows members of the public holding the suspect at the scene until police arrived.
Police said the man, 37, is a European national visiting Cyprus as a tourist. They are also investigating a complaint that he assaulted the shop owner.
Larnaca’s Minor Offences Department is investigating the case. The man is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, when police will seek a remand order to assist their inquiries.
