The Fire Service received dozens of calls for help freeing people trapped in lifts after a power cut hit various parts of the island. The calls came from all districts, though most incidents were reported in Nicosia and Limassol.
Once power was restored, many lifts resumed operation on their own, meaning Fire Service intervention was no longer needed in those cases. The power cut had left various areas across Cyprus without electricity just before 11am, with problems reported in all districts.
Initial information from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) pointed to a fault in the production system, which falls under the responsibility of the independent Transmission System Operator of Cyprus (TSOC). A TSOC official added that it was a major production loss affecting a large number of households and businesses.
According to sources, the problem arose from a loss of communication between photovoltaic parks and the energy distribution centre, and power supply began being restored gradually through an alternative arrangement while work continued to resolve the communication issue between the parks and the distribution centre.
