Makarios Drousiotis has launched a fresh attack on President Christodoulides, alleging in a new social media post that the President acts as a defender of what he calls “the Brotherhood.”
When former President Nikos Anastasiades chose Christodoulides as his successor, Drousiotis alleged, he did not give him a blank cheque. Christodoulides was the person Anastasiades selected to carry messages of unknown content to Vgenopoulos — his “fixer,” Drousiotis said.
“The Brotherhood,” he added, has maintained its influence at the Presidential Palace. A woman known as Sandy told him personally, and messages corroborate her account, that she was among the first to take up a role at the Palace, apparently on the initiative of someone Drousiotis identified as M. Christodoulou. Those messages, he alleged, appear to have been deleted by police from the phone of lawyer Nicos Clerides.
The President, the Law Office and “the Brotherhood” immediately declared the messages forged, Drousiotis says, and directed police and what he called their media “mouthpieces” to follow that line.
He also turned his fire on Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis, alleging that Arnaoutis led the Focus investigations and therefore knows the truth better than anyone. Arnaoutis, he said, is now heading what he called a “rigged investigation” to cover up what he described as possibly the biggest financial scandal in the country’s history — with police targeting those who raise accusations rather than those suspected of corruption.
“Shame!” he wrote.
Background
The Sandy affair erupted after the Volt candidate and investigative journalist published a lengthy social media post alleging the existence of an organised network involving current and former officials, including former President Anastasiades, and what he claims is a modern incarnation of a Rosicrucian brotherhood operating within Cyprus.
Those named have denied the allegations. Nicos Clerides, who represents Sandy, has called for the case to be referred to GRECO, the Council of Europe’s anti-corruption body, saying he has no confidence in a domestic investigation. Police have confirmed the matter is under investigation.
