Cyprus football secures five European spots for 2027-28 in historic UEFA ranking achievement

Relevant News

Cyprus will send five clubs into European competition for only the third time in its history in 2027-28, after securing 15th place in the UEFA country rankings following a dramatic series of results across the continent.

The milestone was confirmed when Swiss side Lausanne were eliminated by Sigma Olomouc, leaving Switzerland without a representative in European competition and cementing Cyprus’s position in the coveted 15th spot. The development came despite Omonia’s exit at the hands of Rijeka.

Cyprus now holds 35,443 UEFA coefficient points and is beyond the reach of the countries immediately below — Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, Sweden and Israel — none of which have any remaining clubs in European competition this season.

This season’s haul of 11,906 points is the highest single-season total ever recorded by Cypriot clubs in European competition, reflecting what the source describes as a clear leap in quality across the domestic game.

What the ranking means in practice

The 2026-27 Cypriot champions will enter the Champions League at the second qualifying round, while the runners-up will enter directly at the third qualifying round via the non-champions path — a significant step up. The cup winners earn a place in the third qualifying round of the Europa League, while the two remaining qualifiers will enter the Conference League at the second qualifying round.
