Larnaca to restrict access to salt lake after recent car incident

The issue of restricting access to the Larnaca Salt Lake, following the incident of two vehicles becoming stranded for several days in the Salt Lake, was addressed at a meeting between involved bodies.

According to an announcement by the Larnaca Municipality, the meeting took place last week with the participation of representatives from the Municipality, the Department of Environment, and the Game and Fauna Service, focusing on the implementation of additional measures to prevent access to the salt lakes.

The meeting is part of the continuous effort by the Municipal Authority to dialogue with the competent bodies on issues concerning the protection of the Larnaca Salt Lakes, which constitute one of the most important wetlands in Cyprus with rich biodiversity.

During the meeting, participants exchanged views and concerns, placing particular emphasis on solutions such as the reinstallation of posts/stakes, exploring the placement of boulders at key vehicle entry points, installing more informative signs, and systematically informing and educating citizens about the consequences of driving and walking inside the wetland.

As noted, “driving and walking inside the wetland of the salt lake when the salt lakes dry up can easily destroy eggs and chicks of birds nesting on the bare surface of the salt lakes“.

At the same time, the main food source for flamingos and other birds, the brine shrimp Artemia salina, which are microscopic and difficult to see with the naked eye, is destroyed.

During the summer months, when the salt lakes dry up, the shrimp remain in a dormant state inside cysts, until the rains allow them to hatch.

It is reminded that visitors can enjoy the salt lakes by following the designated paths, visiting the bird-watching observatory, or the organised viewing and rest areas along the routes.

The Larnaca Municipality, the Department of Environment, and the Game and Fauna Service emphasise that they remain “firmly committed to the protection of the Larnaca Salt Lakes with the aim of preserving biodiversity and improving the quality of life in our city.”
