Police hunt for clues as Demosthenous murder bears contract killing hallmarks

A prominent Cypriot businessman and football club owner was shot dead Friday morning in what police describe as a professional hit, raising concerns about organised crime in Cyprus.

Stavros Demosthenous, 49, was killed in a targeted shooting at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday while travelling in a luxury rental vehicle about 500 metres from his home in the Sfalangiotissa area of Limassol, according to police.

The victim was in the passenger seat with his 18-year-old son driving when a white van blocked their path, forcing them to slow down.

Armed assailants then opened fire, specifically targeting Demosthenous with at least two bullets to the head, police sources told Phileleftheros.

After the shooting, the perpetrators fled the scene. Minutes later, a vehicle matching the description was found burning in the Germasogeia area. Police investigations revealed the van had been reported stolen on September 4 in Nicosia.

Despite being in shock, the victim’s son attempted to drive his father to hospital. While travelling on the highway near Tsirion, their vehicle was involved in a traffic collision and immobilised.

The young man flagged down a passing motorist who transported them to Limassol General Hospital, but Demosthenous was already dead upon arrival.

Police have established a crisis centre at Limassol Police Headquarters and are investigating three separate crime scenes: the shooting location, the traffic collision site, and where the burning van was discovered.

“This is a very serious criminal act which appears to have been well-organised,” police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou told reporters. “We are investigating all possible motives”.

Investigators are reviewing security camera footage from the Sfalangiotissa area and surrounding locations to trace the escape route of the perpetrators. Information suggests the assailants escaped on a large-displacement, black scooter-type motorcycle.

Lambrianidou acknowledged growing concerns about violent crimes occurring during peak morning hours. “It’s a fact that we’ve had other criminal activities during morning hours and at peak times. This naturally concerns the Cyprus Police,” she said.

Demosthenous was a well-known figure in Limassol and the wider business community. Previously a nightclub owner, he later entered football management, first taking over Aris Limassol and later becoming president of Karmiotissa football club.

After stepping down in 2021, he returned to the presidency in November 2023. On May 19, 2025, he had announced his candidacy for the Cyprus Football Association elections.
