Part of the Limassol-Paphos motorway remains closed following the murder of former Karmiotissa FC president Stavros Demosthenous this morning, causing heavy traffic in the area.

Demosthenous was shot by gunmen who ambushed his car near his home in Sfalangiotissa whilst he was driving with his son, according to police sources. A van blocked their vehicle before a person on a motorcycle opened fire.

His son attempted to drive him to hospital but crashed on Tsirion Road around 9am, immobilising the vehicle. Demosthenous appears to have died inside the car.

Police closed sections of the motorway to conduct examinations related to the murder investigation, according to a police statement.

Officers said large numbers of drivers are using the motorway’s emergency lane and urged them to keep it clear for emergency vehicles.

Police found a burnt van in Germasogeia which they believe the perpetrators used to escape. Investigators are searching for CCTV footage in Sfalangiotissa and surrounding areas to track the killers’ movements.

Police sources said all evidence points towards a contract killing.
