Aykut’s property usurpation trial postponed for October

Relevant News

Proceedings against Turkish Cypriot businessman Shimon Aykut, charged with misappropriating Greek Cypriot properties in occupied areas, were postponed to 13 October at 9am by Nicosia Criminal Court.

The prosecution informed the court it had new witness material available during today’s hearing. The defence requested time to study the evidence, prompting the court to postpone the case.

Aykut will remain in custody until the next hearing on 13 October.

Shimon Mistriel Aykut is a Turkish-Israeli property developer and the founder of the Afik Group, an international construction company established in 1995. He holds Turkish, Israeli, and Portuguese passports.

Aykut’s arrest relates to activities in the occupied north where he allegedly conducted unauthorised property development and exploitation. The charges stem from Republic of Cyprus laws regarding property rights of displaced Greek Cypriots following the 1974 invasion.
