Vehicle access to Larnaca Salt Lakes threatens nesting birds and chicks

Relevant News

The Environment Department has reminded the public that vehicle and pedestrian access to the Larnaca Salt Lakes is prohibited throughout the year, particularly when the lakes are dry.

According to the announcement, vehicles or pedestrians crossing the area can destroy eggs and chicks nesting on the exposed Salt Lake surface. Additionally, human presence disrupts invertebrates that form the primary food source for flamingos and other bird species.

These invertebrates remain dormant in cysts on the surface, waiting for rainfall to hatch.

Designated paths available for safe visits

For safe visits to the area, the Environment Department encourages citizens to use designated paths, the bird observatory and specially designed rest and viewing areas along the routes.

The salt lakes serve as a crucial habitat for migratory birds, particularly flamingos, which depend on the area’s unique ecosystem for feeding and breeding.
