The Department of Meteorology issued a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms on Monday, with localised rainfall expected to exceed 35 millimetres per hour and possible hail.
The warning will be in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with strong variable winds expected during storms, the department said.
A weak low-pressure system is affecting the region, with temperatures reaching 18 degrees Celsius in coastal and inland areas and 7°C in mountainous regions.
“Isolated heavy thunderstorms will affect the island intermittently,” the warning wrote. “Local hail is expected during storms, with varying and strengthening winds.”
Evening temperatures are forecast to drop to 4°C inland, 9°C in coastal areas, and 1°C in mountain regions, with possible frost at higher altitudes.
The department forecasts continued unsettled weather through next week, with a cold air mass expected to affect the region on Thursday, bringing potential snow or sleet to mountain areas and a significant temperature drop.
