Limassol church denies it will invest €380m on development project

The Holy Metropolis of Limassol has issued a statement clarifying its role in a proposed €380 million development project in the Sfalangiotissa area, stating it lacks both the financial capability and intention to directly undertake the construction.

The church authority said it aims to enable development of the land parcel, similar to its approach with the German Oncology Centre, by facilitating projects that would contribute to education, health, and environmental initiatives.

The clarification comes in response to media reports about a mammoth development project in Limassol’s Sfalangiotissa area, within the Agios Athanasios municipal district of Amathus municipality.

Documents show the church submitted an environmental impact study for a project valued at €379,495,000. The study was publicly presented on November 5, 2024, at the Limassol Holy Metropolis Conference Centre by ALA Planning Partnership LLC on behalf of the church.

According to the environmental study, the church’s vision involves creating “a vibrant community centred around educational institutions and research and development centres”. The study also indicates that the Holy Metropolis has outlined both spatial/urban planning and operational strategies for the unified development.

The church expressed regret over what it called “incorrect impressions” created by the circulation of “wrong information” about its involvement in the project, reaffirming its commitment to spiritual and charitable work.
