Water engineers assess situation at drained Paphos dam

Relevant News

Engineers from Cyprus’s Water Development Department (WDD) are working at Mavrokolympos dam to explore alternative repair methods following its evacuation, after the original construction technique proved unsuitable for maintenance interventions, according to Agriculture Ministry Director General Andreas Gregoriou.

Gregoriou said technicians are evaluating solutions that would enable future maintenance and problem-solving access to the dam. The team is expected to announce their chosen method in the coming days.

The Director General confirmed this is an unprecedented situation for Cyprus, explaining that the dam’s failure was caused by the breakdown of its ventilation pipeline.

He dismissed suggestions that inadequate maintenance led to the damage.

The Water Development Department’s technical team is conducting assessments to determine the most effective repair approach for the facility.
