Police are investigating a new online fraud case after a 57-year-old woman reported losing over 37,000 euros in a cryptocurrency investment scam.

The victim told Limassol’s Financial Crime Unit that she discovered a website promoting investment schemes in October 2023.

After being convinced by an unknown person to invest, she transferred $20,522 in cryptocurrency investments during November and December.

She also moved existing cryptocurrencies worth 16,762 euros to other digital wallets. The fraud was discovered when she unsuccessfully attempted to withdraw her supposed profits, police said.

The case is being investigated by Limassol’s Economic Crime Investigation Office.

Police warned the public to exercise caution with online investments and to only work with recognised companies and approved financial advisers.

They advised against sharing personal banking details, passwords, or other sensitive information with unknown parties.
