Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has announced that his meeting with Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will likely take place around January 20-21, 2025, with an expanded meeting to follow in March.
Speaking at a New Year’s media event at the “presidential palace”, Tatar insisted that the Turkish Cypriot side is not avoiding dialogue.
“Our main issue is sovereignty. With the acceptance of sovereignty, we can enter into formal talks. We are not avoiding dialogue and can discuss any issue with the other side. We have not cut off contacts or dialogue, and it would not be right to do so,” Kibris Postasi quoted him as saying.
Regarding the expanded meeting, Tatar indicated it would probably be held in Switzerland in mid-March, noting that this meeting was proposed by his side. “We continue the two-state policy with mother Turkey,” he added.
Tatar also discussed the opening of new crossing points, saying that a checkpoint at Mia Milia would help reduce traffic congestion at the Agios Dometios crossing point.
He stated that efforts would continue to “make the Turkish Cypriots’ voice heard” and revealed that he had sought support from the President of Azerbaijan in this regard.
