Police are searching for a 49-year-old Swedish national who escaped from a private clinic in Larnaca where he was being held in custody, authorities said Monday.

Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis has ordered a disciplinary investigation into the incident, whilst the special police officer assigned to guard the detainee has been suspended, police sources said.

The suspect, identified as Hans Jonny Uven, escaped on Sunday afternoon from the clinic where he was receiving treatment while in custody. According to police, the 49-year-old was handcuffed but managed to detach an iron bar from the bed to which he was secured and fled through the window of the room.

Uven was arrested at Larnaca airport on 6 December under a European arrest warrant issued by Swedish authorities. He faces charges related to financial crimes allegedly committed in Sweden between 2021 and 2024.

The fugitive, who was being treated for acute gastroenteritis and chest pain, was due to appear before the Larnaca District Court on Monday for extradition proceedings.

Police said they are also investigating the circumstances under which the special police officer was assigned to this duty, as well as the conditions that led to the escape.
