New palliative care unit to open in Paphos after British couple’s donation

A new fully-equipped palliative care facility is set to open in Tala, Paphos, in early 2025, following the generous donation of a private residence by British expatriates.

The Pafos Hospice, which previously operated from a private hospital in Paphos before suspending operations, will resume its services after a British couple donated their home in Tala for its permanent establishment.

The facility’s renovation has been funded through charitable donations from supporters, enabling the conversion of the residential property into a medical and nursing facility with complete equipment.

Architect Yiannis Koutsolambros, who oversees the property’s conversion, told Phileleftheros that construction work is essentially complete. “All necessary permits from government services have been secured after considerable time and effort”, he said, adding that only the final inspection from the Ministry of Health remains before the unit can begin operations.

The British donors’ residence has undergone extensive modifications to become a modern care centre. Koutsolambros emphasised that all works and equipment are funded through private and voluntary initiatives, with hospice supporters raising significant funds through donations.

The facility, established about 20 years ago primarily by British expatriates, has previously cared for approximately 2,000 patients in their final stages of illness, with 70 per cent being native Cypriots. The service has always been provided free of charge.

The new premises, located in the Stefani area of Tala, required only internal modifications as per Health Ministry requirements. “It’s not a hospital, clinic, or medical centre”, Koutsolambros explained. “There are no outpatient services, visiting patients, or ambulances and hearses coming and going. It’s a six-bedroom residence where patients’ remaining days are made more comfortable”.

The project has been completed entirely through voluntary efforts, with builders, contractors, and material suppliers eagerly contributing to the building’s conversion over the past three years.
