Lania village hosts international art exhibition exploring wine heritage

A month-long international art exhibition exploring Cyprus’s wine heritage through contemporary art will open in the village of Lania this Sunday, featuring works from 11 artists across Europe.

The exhibition, titled “La Bataille des Vins” (The Battle of Wines), draws inspiration from a 13th-century French poem about the world’s first recorded wine competition, where Cypriot Commandaria wine emerged victorious under the judgement of King Philip II of France.

Curator George Lazoglou has assembled artists from Cyprus, Greece, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Portugal to present works across various locations in the historic wine-producing village.

The exhibition aims to move beyond traditional interpretations of Cypriot wine culture, examining viniculture through the lens of contemporary art and new materialist philosophy, according to the organisers.

Academic Mimis Sophocleous, director of Limassol’s Patticheion Municipal Museum, will deliver the opening address at the launch event.

The exhibition, running from Oct. 27 to Dec. 1, is part of the Cultural Decentralisation Programme supported by Cyprus’s Deputy Ministry of Culture. It will be open to visitors Friday through Sunday, with additional viewing times available by appointment.

Featured artists include Jake Chapman from Britain, Niamh O’Malley from Ireland, and Natacha Antão Moutinho from Portugal, alongside prominent Cypriot and Greek artists.
