The Industrial Workers of the World – Cyprus Regional Organising Committee (IWW-CYROC) has denounced Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, Iran and Syria, urging workers to take “immediate collective direct action” against what it termed a “capitalist war machine”.
In a strongly-worded statement, the union pledged support for a general strike initiative by Palestinian and Lebanese workers protesting against “genocide and war”.
The IWW-CYROC called on trade unions across Cyprus to back the action.
The group highlighted a recent 24-hour general strike in Spain, where over 200 trade unions and NGOs protested against “genocide and occupation in Palestine” despite legal restrictions on political strikes. It noted that the Spanish government subsequently called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.
The union criticised the Cypriot government for failing to make a similar call, despite what it described as a “rich history of diplomatic cooperation” with Lebanon.
Expressing alarm at missile strikes visible from Cyprus, the IWW-CYROC warned that the country’s NATO bases risk putting it “on the wrong side of history”. The union insisted there is “no room for neutrality”, urging immediate action.
The statement concluded with the slogans “An Injury to One is an Injury to All” and “No War but the Class War”.
