Andreas Papakonstantinou will become Cyprus’s new Auditor General, following the dismissal of Odysseas Michaelides, the Presidency announced on Tuesday.

His appointment will take place on Wednesday, October 2, at the Presidential Palace.

Papakonstantinou holds a BA in Accounting, Finance, and Economics, a Master’s degree in Business Administration, and a degree in Pastoral and Social Theology.

He is a Certified Auditor from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and a Certified Internal Auditor from the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).

Since 2006, he has been working at the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), and on May 23, 2024, the Cabinet appointed him as the General Director of HIO.

The appointment follows the removal of Odysseas Michaelides, the previous Auditor General, who was unanimously found guilty of improper conduct and behaviour by the Supreme Constitutional Court.

His removal sparked unrest both from citizens and political parties, who accused the government of attempting to silence him and view his dismissal as a blow to transparency.

The dissatisfaction with Odysseas Michaelides’s removal culminated in a large-scale protest held outside the Presidential Palace last Sunday.
