Authorities have informed the public that traffic in the coastal city will be affected today by a protest scheduled to be held by supporters of 1st division football club Omonoia 29th May from six thirty onwards. Fans are protesting what they say is unfair treatment by authorities.
Police will be closing off the Despina and Nikos Pattichis, Archbishop Leontios the 1st and Archbishop Makarios the 3rd avenues, as well as the Dikaiarchou, Navarinou, June 16th, Viktor Hugo and Mykinon roads.
Protesters are expected to gather in an area west of the Despina and Nikos Pattichis avenue around six forty five and will then walk to the avenue in question, as well as through the Archbishop Leontios avenue, ending up outside the Limassol Police Precinct where they will hold a protest for around 15 minutes.
According to the planning provided by police, people are expected to follow the same route back, ending the protest.
The Pattichis avenue will be closed off on both directions, between the junction with Dikaiarchou street, near the ‘Mr Shine’ traffic lights and the crossing with the Archbishop Makarios the 3rd avenue, throughout the protest.
The Archbishop Leontios avenue will close off on both directions, between the junction with the Archbishop Makarios avenue and Navarinou street.
Patrols will remain in the area to provide assistance to the public and facilitate traffic, indicating alternative routes to drivers. Once the protest is finished, avenues and roads will gradually reopen.
There is concern over possible altercations between the Omonoia May 29th supporters, a Nicosia club, with fans from the local Apollonas and AEL teams, who clash around the same time in a city derby.
Anti-riot police will be out in force early this afternoon, with more than 300 officers mobilised both for the protest and the local derby.
