Three MEPs have secured funding for two key Cypriot committees after the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs approved their amendment.

The proposal, put forward by Loucas Fourlas, Costas Mavrides, and Giorgos Georgiou, aims to maintain EU financial support for the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) and the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

According to a statement from Fourlas, the amendment requests 1 million euros for the CMP and 3.5 million euros for the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

These committees are viewed as crucial in fostering trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. Their work, even though described as costly, heavily depends on donor support, with EU funding playing a vital role.

The approved funding is expected to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of both committees’ work, which is considered essential for the Republic of Cyprus and efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, and initiatives aimed at building trust and reconciliation on the island.
