Sewage or sea foam? Dispute erupts over alleged Larnaca beach pollution

Residents of Pervolia‘s “Ammos” area are at odds with the Dromolaxia-Meneou Municipality over the nature of a foul-smelling substance appearing on the beach.

Residents claim the substance is sewage, while the municipality insists it is merely sea foam. This dispute follows a similar incident days ago, where the municipality attributed a similar occurrence to a leak of potable water.

Makis Gerolemou, the municipal official responsible for beaches, told Philenews that an on-site inspection revealed no sewage, only foam caused by recent sea turbulence. “We went to the site and found no sewage traces. What can be seen is foam created by the sea turbulence that occurred yesterday. It emerged at a point where there is a canal that collects rainwater runoff. It is not sewage, and there is no such possibility. Nothing is flowing from the canal.”

Gerolemou further stated that a prior complaint about sewage in the same area, from a year ago, was investigated and found to be a leak of potable water from a hose under the road. He claimed the water was safe for consumption and even demonstrated this by drinking it.

He also invited residents to take a water sample for analysis.

However, locals remain unconvinced, pointing out that this is not a new issue and expressing concern about the health risks, especially for young children playing in the area.

They believe the foam originates from a pipe connected to a nearby residential complex’s sewage treatment plant, a claim the municipality denies.
