The Cyprus Green Party has reported incidents of animal poisoning in the village of Katidata, in the Nicosia district.

The incidents, which according to the party, occurred on 20 June 2024, led to the death of a dog and the disappearance of 40 cats, which were regularly seen in the area but have since gone missing.

The poisonings reportedly took place on a central road in the village and were discovered by a volunteer who was caring for the cats. This location is particularly concerning as it is accessible to children, other animals, and birds, posing a broader public health risk.

Anthi Mouzouri, the coordinator of the party’s animal action group, highlighted the urgency of addressing this criminal act. She stated, “The perpetrators of this heinous act must be swiftly identified. We urge anyone with information to contact the local police station in Evrychou immediately. The impunity for those who commit crimes against animals harms Cypriot society. It is high time that some individuals are brought to justice to set a precedent and put an end to such incidents.”

She concluded: “The impunity for those who commit crimes against animals must end.”
