Doctors call off strike after reaching this deal with SHSO

After nearly four days of behind-the-scenes consultations and a four-hour meeting at the office of Minister of Health Michael Damianos, doctors and the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) reached an agreement, temporarily averting the 48-hour strike scheduled for tomorrow and the day after.

Sources indicate that there was also an intervention from the Presidential Palace during the meeting.

Following the President of the Republic’s intervention, both parties agreed to:

  1. Enter into dialogue to conclude an agreement regarding the financial incentives to be provided to doctors for the years 2024-2026, with the Minister of Health acting as a mediator and the Cyprus Medical Association (PIS) as an observer. The deadline for concluding this agreement is set for October 31, 2024.
  2. Withdraw the proposal made by the SHSO Board of Directors dated June 25, 2024.
  3. Appoint an independent firm to review the data from 2023 and determine the amount of financial incentives doctors will receive for that year. The outcome presented by the independent firm will be binding for all parties involved.

In his statements, the Minister of Health mentioned, “The agreement was reached following the President of the Republic’s call for dialogue between the two sides.”
