State advances bus and bike lane projects in Limassol

The state has made significant progress in preparing for the auction of major infrastructure projects aimed at improving urban mobility in Limassol.

These projects include the construction of bus lanes on Nikos and Despina Pattichi Avenue and the coastal road up to Ayios Tychonas, the creation of bike lanes, and the establishment of two park and ride stations.

According to the Department of Public Works, the tendering process is set to commence in August, with final preparations for the necessary documents and plans currently underway.

Evi Anagiotou, Senior Executive Engineer and Head of the Sustainable Mobility Branch, confirmed the unwavering commitment to these projects, dispelling any rumours of cancellation.

The projects, spanning 16 kilometers of bus lanes and 28 kilometers of bike lanes, are expected to be completed by 2026 and 2029 respectively.

The initiative, supported by 15 million euros in funding from the European Union, is a priority under the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. These projects are designated as green and digital, eligible for financing from the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the Cohesion Fund “THALEIA 2021-2027”.

Anagiotou emphasized that the projects are integral to the Ministry of Transport’s efforts to meet national targets for reducing transport emissions in line with the European Green Deal and the “Fit for 55” legislative package.

They also align with Limassol Municipality’s goals for achieving a Climate Neutral and Smart City by 2030.

The bus lanes on the coastal road will extend from the park and ride at Ayios Tychonas to the Castle area, incorporating technology for bus priority at traffic lights to manage traffic flow.

The exclusive bus lanes from Christaki Kranou Street to the Castle will replace one of the car lanes.

On Nikos and Despina Pattichi Avenue, bus lanes will operate in both directions from the Polemidia roundabout to Makarios Avenue, where another park and ride will be constructed.

From there, bus priority will be facilitated through technology at traffic lights down to the coastal road.
