The Ecologists Movement will remain in opposition, noting that the program of the Christodoulides government does not express even the most basic principles of the Movement, while its practices continue the legacy of the Anastasiades government.
Furthermore, according to the party’s announcement, the appointment of the member of the Ecologists Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation, Ms Antonia Theodosiou, to the position of Commissioner for the Environment does not alter this reality in any way.
It is a fundamental position of the Movement that the role of the Commissioner for the Environment is not part of the executive authority, as its role remains advisory.
The announcement reads as follows:
The Political Committee of the Ecologists Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation convened urgently yesterday and discussed the decisions of the President of the Republic regarding the government reshuffle.
We consider the failure of the Christodoulides government to meet the needs and visions of citizens, especially the challenges arising from the climate crisis and environmental destruction, not to be the result of the individuals that constitute it but rather the political policies pursued.
Just yesterday, President Christodoulides confirmed in his statements that nothing changes in the governance program.
Therefore, the Ecologists Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation remains in its position as the green, critical, and constructive opposition. The government program of Christodoulides does not even remotely represent the positions of our Movement, while its practices often continue those of the Anastasiades government.
The appointment of the member of the Ecologists Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation, Ms Antonia Theodosiou, to the position of Commissioner for the Environment does not change this reality in any way. After all, it is a standing position of the Movement that the role of the Commissioner for the Environment is not part of the executive authority, as its role remains advisory.
It cannot be disputed that Mrs. Theodosiou possesses extensive experience and vast knowledge in environmental protection matters, and we wish her success in her work.
However, it is imperative to clarify that the Movement did not agree to the appointment of the Commissioner for the Environment by its members for several serious reasons. For example, there is a serious disagreement regarding the role of this institution, which started in 2006 and continues to this day without any legal protection, structure, or tools to promote green policies.
