DISY-DIKO electoral alliance breaks down

In the lead-up to the local elections in Cyprus, collaboration efforts between the Democratic Rally (DISY) and the Democratic Party (DIKO) seem to be heading towards an official announcement of failure, particularly concerning major municipalities.

While cooperation is not ruled out for smaller municipalities at the local level, it appears that DISY and DIKO are encountering difficulties in reaching an agreement for major municipalities.

Reports suggest mutual dissatisfaction with the negotiation outcomes. In Pindarou, there is a perception that DIKO’s proposal of Michalis Damianou would give DIKO the largest municipality without providing substantial benefits to DISY. Conversely, DIKO is reportedly deliberating that DISY may be giving up the Strovolos municipality, but secures much more in return.

The reality is that the two parties are unable to collaborate in any municipality in Cyprus, even in the case of Strovolos. Concerns have been raised on the DIKO side regarding the candidacy of Andreas Constantinou for the Nicosia municipality, indicating a preference from Pindarou for the capital.

Yesterday, the Executive Office of DISY convened, addressing the challenges of collaboration with DIKO. Despite acknowledging difficulties, party leadership expressed optimism about a positive outcome with the Democratic Alignment (DIPA).

On the upcoming Monday, the Political Office of DISY is scheduled to meet to discuss and decide on their supported candidates.

Information suggests that DIPA is inclined to support several candidates from DISY, if DISY endorses its candidate for the Strovolos municipality, with the name of Christos Tsingis being considered.

Regarding other municipalities, Pindarou seems to be advancing with the candidacy of current Mayor Andreas Constantinou for Aglantzia. However, a potential shift in dynamics remains possible based on discussions for party collaborations.

In Limassol, the candidacy of current Mayor Nicos Nicolaides gains prominence due to support from the DISY Limassol district committee. Nevertheless, the candidacy of former Deputy Minister of Shipping Vasilis Demetriades, supported by DIPA, is still on the table.

In Paphos, the support for the candidacy of Phaidonas Phaidonos by DISY is considered certain, while the possibility of DIPA’s endorsement remains open. Discussions with DIKO about Paphos are reported to be closed.

The situation in Larnaca’s municipality is still unclear for DISY.

DIKO and DIPA are likely to support Andreas Vyras, and the President of the District Council, Angelos Hatzigeorgiou, seems to have the upper hand for the presidency.

For Famagusta, former Minister of Transport Giannis Karousos is reportedly the frontrunner for the presidency of the District Council. In Paralimni, George Nicolettos appears to be the favored candidate.
