Cyprus’ Gaza humanitarian corridor proposal the only one accepted by Netanyahu

Cyprus’ proposal for a humanitarian sea corridor to Gaza which is to be presented before world leaders in Paris on Thursday is the only one accepted by Israel’s leader Benjaminn Netanyahu.

This is what Philenews reports citing informed sources who also said that the proposal is fully backed by France’s Emmanuelle Macron as well.

Cyprus – the closest EU member state to Gaza – has proposed the expansion of the limited capacities beyond the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

The broad aim is to mobilise financial resources and find ways to get aid into the enclave, while also getting those seriously wounded out given Gaza’s medical infrastructure is fast collapsing.

Israeli officials would also want to check all goods coming from Cyprus’ ports, one source also said confirming that this is a demand by Netanyahu who only accepts Nicosia’s proposal.

President Nikos Christodoulides is to elaborate on the proposal at the international donor conference for the besieged Palestinian enclave later on Thursday.

Philenews also found out that – in addition to what Nicosia had initially proposed – the French have added up their own suggestions to make it even more effective.  Not excluded is the possibility that the proposal will be presented at the conference as a joint one by Cyprus and France.

At the same time, the European Union wants to put the initiative under its own umbrella.
