Cinema screenings, shadow theatre and exhibitions to look out for around Cyprus today.
Screening
Girls Will Be Girls (2024) — Constantia Summer Cinema, Nicosia, 9pm. Tel: 22348203
Part of the 27th Summer Screening Marathon, running every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until September 13. Tonight’s film is the Sundance-winning Indian social drama. Mira, a 16-year-old top student at an Indian boarding school, discovers her sexuality as she grows closer to a classmate, but her strict mother, raised in a highly conservative society, puts up obstacles to the teenagers’ relationship. As the mother insists on intervening to head off the “worst,” a quiet rivalry builds between her and her rebellious daughter.
Running time: 118 minutes.
Shadow Theatre
A Suitcase Called Cyprus — Moniatis, theatre, 8pm.
Conceived by Eleni Papachristoforou, this shadow theatre performance journeys through Cyprus’s memories, traditions and beauty, followed by the experiential workshop The Figure That Remembers. Live music and beloved Cypriot songs, including “To Tertin tis Kartoullas,” “Portokalia tou Karava,” “To Yiasemi” and “Steile Me Mana sto Nero,” complete a nostalgia-filled show designed to take older audiences back through their memories while introducing children to the island’s history and cultural heritage. Papachristoforou is behind the concept, script, performance and workshop facilitation, with Iakovos Kousiappas (live music, musical direction, composition, sound and lighting) and Pavlos Kousiappas (assistant puppeteer, puppet construction and technical support).
Also showing: Katydata, Square, Wednesday September 23, 8pm; Moniatis, outdoor theatre, Wednesday September 30, 7.30pm.
