Cyprus’s Eurovision Song Contest hopes ended Tuesday night as Theo Evan failed to secure a place in Saturday’s grand final, despite a well-received performance of his entry “Shh”.

The first semi-final of the 69th Eurovision Song Contest took place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, featuring 18 countries, though only 15 competed for the 10 qualifying spots.

Spain, Italy and host country Switzerland performed but automatically qualified for the final—Spain and Italy as members of the “Big Five” major financial contributors, and Switzerland as the host nation.

The performance order was determined by Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR through a draw. Evan represented Cyprus as the final performer of the evening, appearing 18th in the running order.

The qualifying countries from the first semi-final will join the pre-qualified nations (France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Switzerland) in Saturday’s grand final, alongside qualifiers from Thursday’s second semi-final.
