Cypriot sailing star Pavlos Kontides will have to wait more for his second Olympic medal after today’s ILCA 7 medal race was abandoned due to insufficient wind conditions.
Currently second in the overall standings, Kontides was forced to start the medal race from the back of the fleet due to a penalty. Despite this disadvantage, he was holding his ground in eighth position when the race was abruptly halted.
Organisers are now searching for a suitable location with sufficient wind conditions to resume the race later today. If weather conditions persist, the medal race will be rescheduled for Thursday.
If the race cannot be completed by then, the final standings will determine the medalists, securing a second Olympic silver for Kontides.
Yesterday’s race was also cancelled before athletes endured three hours on the beach to find out if they could run.
Kontides, a two-time European champion, has won Cyprus’s only Olympic medal to date in the 2012 games in London.
