Cyprus’ Olympic sailing hero Pavlos Kontides had to wait at least another day to compete for a medal in the Laser class after yesterday’s racing was cancelled due to a lack of wind.
The athletes endured a three-and-a-half-hour wait in the scorching sun before the decision was made to postpone the day’s racing.
The medal race is now scheduled for today at 2:10 p.m. Cyprus time, with a potential postponement to tomorrow as a backup. A complete cancellation would see Kontides secure the silver medal based on the current standings.
Kontides, a two-time European champion, has won Cyprus’s only Olympic medal to date after grabbing silver in the 2012 games in London.

Meanwhile, Cyprus’ other Olympic representative, Milan Trajkovic, is aiming to reach the 110m hurdles final when he competes in the semifinals later today (8:05 p.m. Cyprus time). The hurdler is looking to replicate his achievement from previous Olympics.
In the Kite class, Denis Taradin dropped two places after yesterday’s shortened racing and currently sits in 12th position. With five races scheduled for today, Taradin will be aiming to improve his overall standing.
Taradin’s race will start at 1:23 p.m. Cyprus time.
