Savvides and Democracy

Relevant News

The Attorney General, George Savvides, at an event last Tuesday, sent the message that arbitrary statements by irresponsible citizens should be criminalised, claiming that this proposal serves to protect the principles of democracy.

We agree about irresponsible internet users and their fabrications that are presented as facts.

We disagree completely, however, that democracy is served in this way.

Mr. Savvides would better serve democracy if he genuinely convinced through his actions from his own position, that he upholds transparency.

This is how irresponsible critics with ulterior motives would be isolated. After all, he himself has repeatedly stated that he’s not influenced by what’s said about him personally.

Moreover, criminalisation and the stoking of fear are not characteristics of a healthy democracy.
