Larnaca Municipality issues instructions about dangerous mosquito

Relevant News

The fact that the Larnaca district has attracted the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, which spreads fever viruses and other diseases, raised fear among residents.

The first mosquitoes had been detected around the end of September in the area of Dromolaxia and it is believed that they arrived by plane since the distance they can fly is only 500 meters.

At the time, the Health Services had expanded their research and had found these mosquitoes at the Tsiakkilero refugee housing estate, as well as in the community of Kiti, meaning areas near the Larnaca Airport, as Herodotos Herodotou, alternate head of the Health Services, said.

He added that the action plan that is currently in progress will be expanded but noted that since yellow and dengue fever do not exist in the community no disease can be spread and urged people not to panic.

The Larnaca residents were informed by an announcement from the Larnaca Municipality, issued after a relevant meeting.

Warnings and instructions have also been issued to residents, urging them to empty any pots and other containers after recent rains to prevent any incubation and spread of the said mosquito, while door-to-door information continues.

The specific mosquitoes were detected in the residential area by International Atomic Energy Agency experts who carried out inspections throughout Cyprus.
