Around late January, the United Nations Security Council is expected to vote on the resolution for the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which expires on January 31, 2023.
Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and the head of UNFICYP, will brief representatives of contributing countries to UNFICYP and the Security Council in New York during the second week of January.
According to reports, he will also seek to meet the new UN Secretary-General’s envoy once the appointment is announced.
As part of the process, reports from the UN Secretary-General on UNFICYP and the Good Offices in Cyprus will be sent to Security Council members.
Subsequently, Mr. Stewart will provide an update to the Council around January 13. According to information, the reports will be distributed to Security Council members shortly before Mr. Stewart’s briefing.
Earlier in the same week, before the Security Council update, Mr. Stewart is expected to brief representatives of contributing countries to UNFICYP.
Following the Security Council update, the draft resolution will be submitted, and consultations among Member States will take place to finalize the resolution text, which must be adopted by January 30.
Starting in 2023, the mandate of the UNFICYP mission is renewed on an annual basis, not twice a year, as was the practice until this year.
