“Trial” of Greek Cypriots in occupied north adjourned as defence seeks specialist from Turkey

A “military court” in the occupied north has postponed the “trial” of five Greek Cypriots charged with violating a military-prohibited zone until October 8.

The “hearing” on Tuesday in occupied Nicosia was adjourned following a defence request to secure the presence of a specialist expert from Turkey. Defence lawyer Uğur Çulhaoğlu told the “court” that no specialist on the specific subject could be found in the occupied areas, whilst experts from the Republic of Cyprus-controlled areas were unwilling to participate in the proceedings.

The defence noted the importance of this testimony to the case and informed the “court” that it is in contact with specialists from Turkey, requesting the necessary time to complete the procedures. The prosecution raised no objection to the request, resulting in the “court” setting 8 October as the new date for continuation of the “hearing”.

Separate “trial” on trespassing and privacy charges continues Wednesday

The five Greek Cypriots face a second separate case being heard at “Trikomo District Court”. A “hearing” scheduled for Wednesday concerns charges of illegal entry onto foreign property, causing disturbance and violation of personal data.

Witnesses who allegedly took photographs related to the case are expected to be called at the proceedings.
