Environmental activists have raised the alarm over serious pollution at Polemidia reservoir, where untreated wastewater is reportedly flowing into the dam, causing intense odours and raising concerns about ecological damage.

Andreas Evlavis, coordinator for the Movement of Ecologists in Limassol and Paphos, conducted an inspection of the site following resident complaints.
He reported finding evidence of sewage contamination that is severely affecting water quality and the surrounding ecosystem.

“The images speak for themselves. Sewage is flowing into Polemidia dam, creating an unbearable stench that torments local residents”, Evlavis said.
A video recorded by a resident on November 10, 2024, and published here by Philenews appears to document the pollution.
The environmentalist identified two possible sources of contamination: the Vati wastewater treatment plant that began operations in recent years, or another unidentified source.
Despite repeated reports to the Environment Department and Water Development Department over the past two years, authorities have failed to address the growing problem.

“All relevant officials have been aware of the situation for two years, but no substantial intervention has been made”, Evlavis said.
He called for urgent action to identify the pollution source and implement protective measures for both the environment and residents’ quality of life.
The Green Movement is demanding immediate mobilisation of relevant agencies to investigate and resolve the issue, citing mounting environmental and health risks to the wider area and reservoir.
