Environmental officials are conducting an on-site investigation at Akrotiri Salt Lake to determine the source of sewage that has flooded part of the wetland.
The Department of Environment is leading the investigation where water accumulation and strong odours have been reported.
The investigation aims to trace the origin of the wastewater flow. Water samples will be collected for additional laboratory analysis.

The Limassol Sewerage Board issued a statement responding to media reports about the contamination: “Regarding today’s reports about contaminated water being discharged into Akrotiri Salt Lake, the Limassol Sewerage Board announces that following sampling and testing of its storm drains that lead to Akrotiri Salt Lake, no sewage or treated water has been discharged into the Salt Lake through the Board’s storm drains”.
