A 24-year-old Pakistani man found dead in a Nicosia car park was allegedly killed by police gunfire during an incident in the buffer zone, after an autopsy revealed a 9mm bullet in his body.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has confirmed that the man’s death is linked to shots fired by anti-poaching police unit officers during an encounter in Potamia’s buffer zone.
The victim’s body was discovered by a civilian at approximately 21:15 in an open parking area on Calypso Street, roughly an hour after the buffer zone incident occurred at 20:00.
A post-mortem examination conducted on Friday revealed a bullet wound on the right side of the victim’s back, prompting the case to be transferred to CID from local police.
The initial scene examination had ruled out criminal activity.
The Ministry of Health has requested a police report on the incident, particularly regarding the state pathologist’s handling of the initial examination.
Police seized firearms from the officers involved in the buffer zone incident, where shots were fired at the tyres of three vehicles that were reportedly driving towards police officers.
Ballistics tests and police confirmed that the death of the man is connected to the police shooting incident near Potamia, and the death was a result of shots fired with a service weapon.
