Police Chief appoints new investigating officer to probe murderer’s escape

The new Chief of Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, has appointed a new investigating officer to probe the conduct of three police members suspended following the escape of high-profile convict Doros Theofanous (the “hairdresser”), police spokesman Christos Andreou said on Tuesday.

The new appointee, who is not affiliated with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, replaces the previous investigator in a move aimed at enhancing transparency, Andreou told state radio.

“This decision was made to ensure transparency, as the previous investigating officer was part of the CID Headquarters,” Andreou explained.

The CID Headquarters was recently placed under the leadership of Charalambos Philippides, the former deputy director of prisons.

Andreou clarified that the ongoing investigation focuses solely on the three suspended police members and is separate from the inquiry into four prison guards who are also currently suspended.
