An unidentified assailant shot a pet cat with an airgun outside its home in Larnaca in full view of its owners.
The cat’s owner reported that the incident occurred while the pet was on the pavement outside their property. An individual “shot our cat with an airgun while we were in our yard, unfortunately before we could identify the perpetrator,” the owner stated.
The injured cat has been left paralysed in its hind legs and underwent surgery today, with its survival remaining uncertain.
Police have opened an investigation after receiving the formal complaint. Authorities are awaiting the bullet and a medical report from the veterinarian before proceeding with the case.
“We cannot call ourselves a serious state when disturbed individuals can roam freely with airguns in densely populated areas of Larnaca near Aradippou, causing such inhumane harm to whatever crosses their path,” the owner told philenews.
The cat’s owner has raised concerns about weapon regulations in Cyprus, questioning the effectiveness of current controls. “What differentiates us from gun ownership in America when in our country as well, many individuals possess weapons, whether airguns, hunting rifles, or military firearms in their homes?” the owner asked.
The family has expressed doubts about the police’s commitment to finding the perpetrator but stated they will pursue all available measures to identify the responsible party.
