Court delays British father’s sentencing in Paphos hotel death case

Paphos District Court on Monday adjourned the sentencing of a British father until Tuesday, at his defence’s request. The 37-year-old has admitted causing the death of his three-year-old son by a reckless, rash or dangerous act.

The boy died after falling about 10 metres from the fourth floor of a hotel in Paphos, on the first day of the family’s holiday in Cyprus.

The defence asked for the delay so it could receive documents from Britain to support its plea in mitigation. It told the court on Monday that the documents were vital to its case and would weigh heavily in persuading it to show leniency and impose the lowest sentence available.

At a hearing on August 27, the father’s lawyer asked for the prosecution to be suspended on humanitarian grounds. The request was rejected. The Attorney General acknowledged the tragedy of the case but said it did not change the fact that a three-year-old child had died.

The father had travelled to the United Kingdom after the restrictions placed on him were temporarily lifted, so he could attend his son’s funeral and deal with procedural matters as the boy’s guardian. He returned to Cyprus in September to attend the proceedings.
