Paphos bodies moved to refrigerated container for morgue repairs

Bodies kept in the morgue at Paphos General Hospital are being moved temporarily to a refrigerated container next to it while work is carried out on its cold chambers, after instructions were given on Tuesday, Sigma reported.

A porter who also works in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department (A&E), and is sent to the morgue when needed, was apparently called in to help move the bodies. This has drawn objections from staff and raised questions about hygiene.

Beds have been placed inside the container, according to the report.

State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said the container was there to hold the bodies from the morgue’s cold chambers while the chambers’ alarm system was repaired, so that it would send an alert if any fault occurred.

Moving the bodies, disinfection, repairing the system and returning the bodies would take about four days, he said.

Charilaou added that the container met all required specifications and that all appropriate measures were being taken.
