Several roads in central Nicosia will close to traffic on Wednesday morning for a doxology at the Cathedral of Apostle Barnabas at the Archbishopric and the parade marking the 28 October anniversary.

Parking has been banned since midnight in Archbishopric Square and on Korai, Isokratous, Zenonos Kitieos and Michalaki Karaoli streets. The ban also covers Konstantinou Palaiologou, Omirou, Vyronos and Evagorou avenues.

From 9am, traffic will be stopped on:

  • Vyronos Avenue, from the Museum traffic lights to its junction with Grivas Digenis Avenue

From 9.30am, the parade route will also close: Vyronos and Omirou avenues, Michalaki Karaoli Street, and Dimostheni Severi Avenue from the traffic lights towards Grigori Afxentiou Avenue.

Where to park

The following areas have been designated for people heading into the centre to watch the parade:

  • the Davila moat
  • the area next to the moat, below the Town Hall
  • the area next to the Fire Service
  • the area next to the Kolokasi opening

Bus changes

After 9.30am, urban buses from Strovolos, Lakatamia, Anthoupoli, Parissinos, Engomi, Ayios Dhometios and Ayios Pavlos will drop off and pick up passengers at the Rigainis Street car park, near the Solomos statue. They will reach it via Pafou and Kinyra streets.

Buses from Pallouriotissa, Kaimakli, Aglandjia, Dasoupoli and Latsia will serve passengers at Kaningos bridge, near the “Ochi” kiosk.

Vehicles are also not allowed on the section of Makariou III Avenue between the Nicosia Central Police Station traffic lights and Evagorou Avenue.

Weather and police appeals

The parade will take place while a yellow warning for isolated severe thunderstorms is in force. The Department of Meteorology issued the warning for 2am to 6pm on Wednesday. Storms are expected to affect the western half of the island first, then other areas from midday. Rainfall could reach 35 to 55 millimetres an hour, hail is possible, and gusts during storms could temporarily reach force 7 to 8.

Police urged drivers to follow the instructions of officers on duty. They asked spectators to stay on the pavements so the parade can pass smoothly.

The use of drones is banned during the events.
