Andreas Papaconstantinou, Cyprus’s newly appointed Auditor General, emphasised the need to preserve the independence of his office during his swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday.
Papaconstantinou thanked the President of Cyprus for entrusting him with this challenging role, noting that expectations are high. He stressed that to succeed, the Audit Office must remain independent and maintain its voice.
The new Auditor General expressed his intention to utilise the expertise of the Audit Office staff. He also sent a message to those subject to audits, urging them to accept and make use of the audit findings.
Papaconstantinou acknowledged his predecessor, Odysseas Michaelides, with whom he had met for a briefing. He quoted Michaelides as having “made every effort to facilitate my initial steps”.
The President called on the new Auditor General to be stringent with all, starting with the Presidential Palace itself. He referred to the goals of modernising the state and its institutions, as well as strengthening the rule of law.
Encouraging Papaconstantinou to leverage the capable staff of the Audit Office to enhance his work, the President stated that no one escapes the scrutiny of the Audit Office.
