Family reports ransom demand for missing student

Concern is mounting for Sahruar Ahmed Emon, a 22-year-old student from Bangladesh who has been missing in Cyprus since June 12, after his father told police that unknown persons contacted him claiming to have kidnapped his son and were demanding a ransom.

Emon left the house he shares with others in Oroklini at 6:30pm on Friday, June 12, telling the people he lives with that he was heading to a factory in Kofinou, where he was due to start a new job.

Phileleftheros has learned that police traced the last signal from his mobile phone to Kofinou, where searches failed to locate him.

Investigators believe Emon travelled to the area by bus, as he has no vehicle of his own. Bus routes serving the area are now under examination, and police are searching for CCTV footage.

That evening, Emon sent a friend a message containing a specific location, but there has been no further contact since.

His father, who lives in Greece, later received a message from his son’s phone asking for help. Unknown persons then reportedly demanded a ransom for his release.

Police have asked Greek authorities for help in locating the young man’s father.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact CID Larnaca or the Citizen’s Line on 1460.
