The Municipality of Larnaca is set to construct municipal apartment buildings with units available for rent to impoverished families based on income criteria.
As revealed in an interview with Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras, the project has already received approval from the Municipal Council and will seek funding from European funds.
The Municipality of Larnaca aims to build three to four apartment buildings in the initial phase, with a designated area already identified in its Turkish Cypriot neighborhood, Scala, specifically on the parallel road to Piale Pasha.
The project is currently under review by the municipality’s technical service, which will initiate the processing phase.
The next step involves launching a competition for a designer and securing funding, a process estimated to take approximately two years. Mayor Vyras emphasized that there would be no financial gain for the Municipality of Larnaca, stating, “The goal is to make available affordable rent on beneficiaries, covered by government allowances, to provide a solution to people who demonstrably cannot afford to rent.”
The proposal for the construction of apartments to facilitate vulnerable groups by utilizing municipal or state property was submitted by the AKEL party and was approved by the Municipal Council on November 3, along with several other projects falling within the new program period.
Meanwhile, by 2024, the first social housing units of the Cyprus Land Development Corporation are expected to be ready in the city of Larnaca, benefiting individuals with low incomes.
The complex, named ‘Ianthi,’ is situated at the entrance of Larnaca near the Metropolis Mall area, consisting of 34 apartments to be completed in two phases.
The first phase will see the construction of 24 residential units, including 16 three-bedroom and 8 two-bedroom apartments, with a project cost of €3.8 million.
The project is implemented on a plot of land measuring 4,000 square meters, acquired by the Cyprus Land Development Corporation from the Municipality of Larnaca.
